Color me interested. I have googley-eyes for the Mt. Roger's winter shindig, but that is a LOOOONG way from Madison, WI. The Duluth area on the other hand, is pretty do-able!

Down booties are good...comfy after walking, warm in sleeping bag! Besides, you have to wear something while your boots freeze solid!

White gas stove for snow melting a must!!!!!! Count on 6 to 8 ounces of fuel a day in sub 0º .... more 8. Do not skimp here.

Be able to field strip and repair your stove .... bring repair parts.

    Know fire skills!!!!!!

Busy all the time with chores. Short days.

Booties or Mukluks are a treat.

Snowshoe hiking is hard with a pack or pulk on un-broken trail .... control your sweat. Sweat is bad!!!!!!!

    Don't think miles.......

Hot lunch .... you will be glad you did.

    Cigars make your fingers cold.

Candles are fun and can keep your boiled water warm longer.

You will sleep with a lot of gear .... cameras, water, batteries ......

A Mini-Atomic will boil your cup and half of water in -26º for breakfast from the hammock.

    Know fire skills!!!!!!

Extra gloves, socks and hat is not foolish!!!!!

Here is the video of that trip if you want to get pumped:

Beep, thanks for the book recommendation. I have the Snow Walker book in my cart on Amazon (looking for some other small items as I type this), and I have recently ordered a Winter Quilt from Warbonnet, as well as a Winter Incubator from Stormcrow (early Birthday and Xmas presents to me! - I'm so, very broke now! LOL)

Recommendation on snow shoes? I really know nothing about them, so I'm hoping between the forum and the book you recommended I can find the right thing.

I'm going to do some practice (backyard) cold weather hangs as soon as my Winter Incubator shows up (I'm in line like everyone else), and hopefully a stealth hang as soon as we have a good snow...including hiking to the stealth location to help work out the kinks of my setup.

So I'm a couple steps closer to being ready for this hang! I'd call me 90% IN!

The Conovers are big fans of traditional snowshoes. The snowshoes I have are from Tubbs (the big heavy duty mountaineering ones, aluminum tubing with synthetic "web"). I believe Fourdog has "extras" that could be borrowed for the trip.

If I were you, I'd try to borrow or rent some for the trip. No need to make a big investment unless it's something you'll use frequently, IMO.

I would LOVE to go. I think I could be packed in about an hour. But: I work Friday (& Monday) that weekend & have the cash for ONE long trip that Month, so I'm going to Mt Rogers. Esp as it's on my 5 day weekend

Thanks for the car pool offer. Will save up for next year & get Snowshoes & Mukluks tween then & now.

If Mt Rogers is "Grad school" the MN hang will be "LIFE in the real world"

I SO WANT TO GO!!! (Insert long string of 4 letter words here )
