I just received my Mag. Military shoe shoes from the Guide last night. They are much nicer then I expected and appear brand new. With shipping to Wisconsin they cost me $50. The bindings are somewhat difficult to figure out, so I pulled up the pic of these from the online Guide website which was big help. Some of the spring biased cams that secure the straps appear to be backwards. So I needed to thread the webbing opposite to get them to lock up - no big deal. My boots are from Wiggy's with a removable inner bootie. I really like these boots are they are a good cross between a mukluk and a Sorrel type pack boot. The bottom is rubber, so it's waterproof, but the inner bootie is removable. I sleep in these booties at night to keep my feet warm and use them in the boots during the day. I really like these booties because they are made from Wiggy's Lamilite which I think is basically polarguard treated with silicone and laminated. They dry instantly and don't absorb water, so I prefer these over my down booties for winter camping. I am a heavy sweater, so moisture management is always tough for me in the cold. I will try out the SS later today and see how they work. My boots are size 14 wide, but seem to still fit. Will report back later.
I choose these Snow shoes based on price and my body type. I am 6-2@275lbs. With gear I easily go over the 300lbs mark. Not too many SS that will give me the floatation I need at this weight.

Your bindings are not installed correctly. There should be no apperance of "backwards straps or keepers" Attached is a description, instructioins from the military bindings and photos of correct installation. If they are used wrong they can be a pain, but installed correctly they are about the best I have found, and can be done with mittens on.
Thanks! I thought something was not correct.
Very helpful here. I will give this a try.
You saved me some frustrations here.
Thanks
Yes, very similar to think seatbelt material. Plenty strong for sure.
I wore these every winter for years being stationed with the Air Force in Minot ND. and Fairbanks AK.. They are fairly warm but not waterproof. From Lonetracker: just ordered a pair of these military surplus mukluks.

can not wait to try them out.i usually were sorel type boots all winter and found out last winter camping that all that sweat that accumulates and is trapped in the boots made it allmost impossible to put them on in the morning.froze solid. the mukluk aproach sounds like the ticket.
Hi Beep - Please remove Tom from the list next time you update, he's not going to make it now.
For those who are making a long drive for this trip, I am guessing that many of you will get close to the hang location the night before? I plan to make the drive from Madison, WI to at least the cities or farther the night before the hang. Don't want to be tired from a long drive the morning we all get together at Toby's in Hinkley at 10:30 am. Just wondering who has plans to stay where the night before the hang? I am still trying to figure out where I will stay, etc. It may be a good night for some of us to get together for additional planning before the next morning and maybe a beer?
Beep - I also took your GPS coordinates you listed and created waypoints using Garmin Mapsource software. Any chance I could email you these waypoint and you could verify the accuracy here? I could also just send you a few screen shots from the topo maps I created as well. If they look accurate, I could share this Mapsource waypoint file with anyone who would be interested.
Canoeski and I will be driving together from Madison.
