    Lightweight hammocks?

    Hey guys,

What options are out there for lightweight hammocks? I know of the Grand Trunk Nano 7, as well as their lightweight range, but beyond that what choices are out there? I thought a double layer hammock was a good idea when I first started hanging but now I have a UQ it seems I'm lugging weight which has no purpose?

Problem with the GTs seem to be they're not the biggest hammock. I'd like something a bit roomier even if it adds a touch on weight (counting grams but still comfort over weight!)

You could make your own hammock with the right material and get a good lightweight option. Some of the green ripstop fabric I purchased from WalMart is very light and has worked great for making light, packable hammocks.

We don't have walmarts over here in Scotland, no idea where I'd go for the fabric If I pick up a second hammock I'll be trying my hand at making my own whoopie slings tho.

None of the Walmarts where I live have fabric, so I went to a fabric store to find ripstop nylon--they had it, but for me the price wasn't acceptable. Eventually I settled for a forest-green polyester jacket liner. Works like a charm (so far): pretty light, packs small, and I was able to get it on the cheap (which is what I'm all about).

BTW, is this to replace your 3-hole cigarette burn hammock? (I would definitely hang low till a replacement could be found)
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

Well it's my DD that has burns in it. I think it does affect the integrity somewhat but I'm not too worried (won't be saying that when I break my bum-bone at 3 in the mornin), guess thats' what I get for drinking too much when I go camping. Suppose I'll have to patch 'em up, no idea how tho!

Love the DD but it IS a narrow hammock. A wider single layer hammock would be more comfy and lighter I think. This one weighs in at 950g plus suspension so it ain't exactly lightweight.

Other than for a sleeping matt is there any point to a two layer hammock?

But the grass is always greener on the other side, as they say.

Not sure what kind of weight range you're looking for, but you might look at the Warbonnet Traveler

weight starts at 12.5oz and goes up from there, it's pretty much a basic gathered end hammock but with a lot more room than the Grand Trunk hammocks. You should also be able to shave an ounce or two in there if you switch to whoopie slings from the stock WB suspension.

If you're looking for a featureful hammock you could try a single-layer Warbonnet Blackbird also, will be lighter than the DL versions and you'd still get stuff like the mosquito net, shelf, footbox etc.

Hmm that Warbonnet traveller looks pretty decent. Call me crazy but I don't like the blackbird - can't take the bugnet off or flip it all the way over like my DD as far as I understand, and I like the fact a hammock is 'symmetrical'

Well it's an expendible so I don't count it in my base weight

If you can handle sewing HB, you can get all the fabric mail order.

These guys have sorted me for all my material:

    http://www.fabrics-n-stuff.co.uk/

I'm making a double layer hammock out of their 2m wide parachute ripstop, with a bugnet made from their polyester aircraft fabric ( this stuff is seriuosly light-I make it about 0.7 oz/sq yd). It should weigh about a pound when done-half the weight of my DD and much bigger to boot.
