    Heavy Rain/Wind

The other week I did a stealth hang on Green Island, Candlewood lake (Western CT) and was forcasted to have heavy rain/wind. I have a OES Standard tarp and was worried about my UQ getting wet. I went w/the suggestion of using a poncho as an under cover to protect the UQ. Well it poured most of the night and I awoke to find some interesting things. First of all the tarp work better than expected for its size. Second I had more wetness between the poncho and UQ than I did on the out side of the poncho from blown rain. I hung it rather loose to let the UQ breath but that was not enough. I'm using the stock WBBB web/buckle suspension. I was planning on the cinch buckles to act as "drip rings" but no such luck. The rain worked its way to the hammock and then down along the zipper. I had hung the tarp over a full length ridge line for extra support due to the wind which did help but I did get some drips on to my netting from water wicking down the tarps ridge line. So all in all some good lessons were learned about my set up and I had fun doing it too!

I'm just guessing, but I would bet that the water came in on the tarp ridgeline & not the hammock suspension. The one time I did it that way in a heavy rain I too got soaked under me. Now, when it's going to rain, the full length ridgeline goes OVER the tarp.
Something you can try next time.

I thought of that too but the tarp RL was not touching the webbing. The WBBB knotted ends were wet which then found its way down the zipper. The RL will be going OVER next time unless I go back to tieing off at both ends instead.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear about water getting past the suspension cinch buckles and to the hammock. I have only slept one night in the WBBB where it rained all night, but I had no problems at all that one time. But, that is now something to consider and watch out for.

I'm new to hammocking, and so far haven't used my tarp in the rain. I'm glad to hear that the OES MacCat standard gave adequate coverage. That makes me feel good about my MacCat deluxe for rain protection.
I've noticed that some folks tie little pieces of string along their suspension lines. Does this usually do the trick for drips/water tracking? If you tie out your tarp on both ends (not a single ridgeline) does this eliminate the drip problem on the tarp?

And does it matter what material the strings are made of (poly, nylon?)

    cotton

It seems like I read somewhere it should be cotton. The cotton wicks the water very well.

    ridgeline dripping

I lprefer ridgeline under the tarp most.

The water will drip along/ follow the ridgeline to the lowest point, and that would be in most cases the middle of the ridgeline

To prevent the dripping I was thinking (haven't tested it yet) to tighten the ridgeline not completely horizontal but on 1 tree a few inches higher than the other.

With some good suspension you should be able to keep the lowest point of the ridgeline not under the tarp and the water should follow the ridgeline to the lowest point and that will be at the other tree..

I’m a big fan of a “over the top” ridge line for this reason. I have had water come down the ridge line when going under the tarp. Ran straight down to the first thing I had hanging and started the drip.
    Over the top every time.
