I'm establishing an outdoor storage building as my gear locker. It's not heated or cooled and will experience swings in temperature on a daily basis. It's pretty secure in most respects, but not absolutely bug-proof. I'm thinking of a bug-proof, dust-proof sack that I can suspend from the rafters, and in which I can hang my down quilts and sleeping bags. Does anyone know of anything that is available commercially (I don't sew), or, does anyone have a better idea????
I would seal them in a couple of layers of garbage bags, knotting the top of the bags so that air, bugs,dust,debris,etc can't get in. You could then put the bagged item in a large stuff sack for abrasion resistance. Walmart sells some really large stuff sacks in their camping section for cheap.

How about a mattress cover? Basically just a big vinyl bag.
For down stuff I'd use a king sized pillow case and knot or zip tie it closed, then hang it, the bugs won't get in it, and the mice shouldn't be able to get to it.
Space bag to the rescue.
It's a big ziplock bag that allows you to suck the air out, just don't suck the air out and it should be fine. Not sure it would be long enough for a sleeping bag but hey, it's an option.

If you don't necessarily have to hang the items, you can easily get air-tight plastic storage bins/boxes in an array of sizes and shapes. They are relatively cheap, stack well, and are quite sturdy.

Thanks for all the immediate responses. I had no idea you guys were waiting by the phone for me to call. Is putting the quilts loosely into a large bag as good as hanging them? I'm so fond of these new quilts that I want to do all I can to take the best care of them.
Many of the high-end down sleeping bags come with large linen storage bags for storage, so yes, storing loosely in a large bag is an appropriate storage method.Originally Posted by DougTheElder

As long as you don't compress them they should be fine.
