Avon Valley National Park is located about 50km NE of Perth, Western Australia. I'd been wanting to get away for a camp with friends for a while and at last the time had arrived. The purpose of the trip was to take my daughter for her first hang in the bush and to give a nephew a taste of camping. The nephew didn't make it but my daughter and a couple of friends and their kids did. We'd chosen a site called the valley campsite, which funnily enough was located in a valley. The area was looking very dry due to the lack of rain this winter and as such there was already a total fire ban in place. There went the plans for watching the bush TV.
The campsite had plenty of good trees from which to hang and the hammocks where soon up and ready to go, in fact even before my ground dwelling friends had even got their tents out of the bags.
The homemade hammock my daughter was sleeping in performed well as did the home made whoopies and soft shackles. The improvised mozzie net I put over her hammock didn't look pretty but it certainly did the job.
After dark we went for a wander to see if we could see any wildlife but none was there to be seen although at least 3 mopokes (boobook owls) could be heard, one quite close.
The next morning we were woken to the sounds of a number of kookaburras. We went for a bit of an explore before breakfast and saw a number of interesting insects plus this little guy, a huntsman spider.
After breakfast we packed up camp and then went for a bit of a walk. A little excitement was added when one of the kids unknowingly stood on a bullant nest. These large ants are quite aggressive and have a nasty sting. Thankfully all the ants were flicked off without anyone being stung.
After the walk the all to brief trip was at an end. My daughter loved the trip and already plans are underway for the next one.
