Is it just me or is 40" wide, crazy wide?

you'd definitely benefit from cutting some darts in a pad that wide. i found greater comfort from darting mine and it's on 24" wide.
i just carry mine rolled up on the bottom of the pack. however for 40" wide i'd probably try to attach it vertically
Hey Guys,
I tried a little daytime hang yesterday with this huge foam pad. Thanks to the size I had no problem with it moving around. There's nowhere for it to go inside my HH!! Unfortunately it bunched up like mad so it wasn't very comfortable.
I chopped that 40"x60" chunk down into a pair of 30"x40" pieces and slept on one of them instead (now 30" wide). This was after reading a post about folks using a pair of 20"x30" pieces (one for the shoulders and the other under the butt/thighs). This was much more manageable and didn't bunch so much. I crashed in the back yard last night and slept pretty well.
One more slice and I'll have that pair of 20"x30" chunks. This should roll up into a very packable 20" tube. I may roll them up around my z-rest if I need some extra insulation but I think just the pair should be good for "cool" temps.
Gotta love HF...The answers are here if you're willing to look long enough.
With the size you are using, it won't fit inside you pack. The 20"-24" wide ones make great inner walls inside the pack, and are absolutely necessary if you carry a frameless pack.
I would roll yours so that you have a cylinder 40" long and strap it vertically to the outside of your pack. Again, if it were 20" wide, horizontal would work without snagging everything between the trailhead and your camp.
As was suggested above, you could cut it down and re-assemble it modular style, once in camp. I know people that have cut their pad and then used duct tape to put it together so that it hinges. It helps keep the pads from shifting on each other, too.
