Why would you worry about cleaning your mess kit at 10*. Your living in the freezer. Dump some warm water into it and swish out the chunks and it is ready for next use.

I like melting icicles, on a sunny day it can work as you walk: break off a few & toss in your water bottle, put the bottle on the sunny side as you walk. I don't treat my water, so what you do with the "Raw" water is up to you.
Have done the melt snow thing once, it took 3 pots of dense PACKED snow to get 1/2 pot of snow (2 cups). IF I had to do it in an emergency & had a fire I guess that would be OK, but for everyday use, just not worth the effort. Ice is easier, at least for me. So far, all of the water sources I have seen, if they have water the ice is fairly easy to get out. So far!
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

When it's really cold, I find cleanup of my kitchen kit easier. Just pour a little water in the pot & swirl it around a few times. It will freeze on the walls & bottom of the pot. Any leftover debris will be encrusted in the ice. Let it sit a minute to completely harden, then turn the pot upside down & tap. Voila! Clean pot

Just don't try to use Dr. B's Magic Soap in cold weather. It creates a big fatty mess!

Always an interesting time of year to liquify ... between the good snows and the frozen lakes and streams.
Here in Minnesota I leave the gravity filter home and boil all my water. I bring Aqua Mira drops. Slow but OK. I insulate them so they do not freeze.
In the past I really watch for open water ... usually streams. If not I break the surface with rocks or such. Lakes ... I have been able to skirt them and more often than not find a run out source.
It ups the game a bit for sure.....
