    Try before you Buy

I have been lurking here for a few months having been directed here from Whiteblaze. I am real interested in trying the hammock route. Our local REI didn't have any Hennesey's in stock but they are available online. None available for rent. Is there a way to "try before you buy" with these things? Can you get one from REI, try it out and return it if you don't like it?

I see you're in Greensboro. I'll let you borrow my Hennessy Explorer Deluxe if you want. Just let me know. I live over in Winston-Salem, but work in Greensboro.

That would be very cool! Thanks! How does that model do in cold weather?

Welcome to HF, glad to have you with us. Nice of you to offer the HH for trial, NCP. Anyway, you won't find a better or more knowledgeable groups of guys anywhere.

The same as any hammock; cold without the right insulation. The biggest problem IMO with the Hennessys is trying to use a pad or sleeping bag in them. It can be done (I've done it), but it takes a bit of practice. UQs are the only way to go with a HH.

    Welcome to the forum!

What they said... hammocking in any model in cold weather takes some planning.

Check out Just Jeff's page on staying warm in a hammock.

Thanks for your help thus far! I went on my first backpacking trip in over 15 years a few weeks back and realized my tent which was "state of the art" back then is a tad heavy and bulky by today's standards. I have done a little reaserach and the hammock system really seems to make sense in a backpacking situation
