For huggers, polyester is great and nylon is acceptable. For long straps, nylon is a no-no.
For drawcord, it doesn't really matter b/c they don't support any weight. Biggest issues are 1) is it "grippy" enough for the cordlock to hold (i.e. not slick, big enough diameter, etc), and 2) will it cut into the fabric (i.e. too thin on a stuff sack under pressure and it'll cut into the channel opening). Might also consider if it'll soak up water (cotton string), but that only matters if you're making something that'll be exposed.
Thru-hiker sells some grosgrain ribbon that's good for drawstrings. Check it out for ideas. Shoestrings and 550 cord is ok...a little on the thick side, though.

I think the polypro works best. Seems to be the consensus view here, anyway.

HH said that the new ones they are sending me (the shorter) are either nylon or polyester.

Just to clarify the debate about webbing in general, whether it's for tree huggers or hammock supports:
Polyester : Best choice overall
Polypropylene (Polypro): Okay
Nylon : Bad. Avoid if at all possible

How can I tell if I got nylon or if I got polyester with the new huggers HH is sending? I don't think there's any tag on my current huggers saying what they are. (I'll have to give them a closer look when I get home.)
Oops, I was pretty sure 'bout the webbing, I was asking about the drawcord.
#18 braided nylon mason line/contractor line is good. very light, i've seen it in bright colors and in hunter green, never black though. available at home depot
