    What to cut Zing-It/Lash-It/Amsteel with?

    What to cut Zing-It/Lash-It/Amsteel with?

What is the *best* tool to cut this cord with? I've tried razor blades, awesome kitchen knives, and I'm currently using a Milspec medic's shears (which worked great for the first few cuts but now...not so much).

I'm working on making a bunch of little items for myself and friends, and I'm getting frustrated with frayed ends on my cord. And you can't take a lighter to it like you can with nylon as it seems to puff up rather than squish down.

    Suggestions?

I wouldn't do this for only 1 or 2 cuts; but if you're making a bunch, you can use a soldering iron with a flat tip. I use this one I got from Lowes. I don't remember if it included the flat tip or if I had to buy it separately.

Put the iron in your vise and then hold the line against the iron's tip, It will simultaneously cut and seal the end.

A sharp knife and a block of wood to cut on is probably the easiest. You can't melt it the way you can with nylon and polyester. For the cut ends of nacrabiners I like to use 1/2" wrap of aluminum duct tape - makes a stiffer end that's easier to poke through the loop of the biner.

A razor blade that hasnt been used much and a cutting board or piece of wood. It helps make those very very nice angle cuts that they tell you to make while splicing.

I think that's what I'm going back to. I just need to get myself a cutting board dedicated to cord cutting, otherwise I'll hear about it from the better looking half.

I like the soldering iron idea, but that's a heavy duty Weller. I wonder if my heated knife would work...I need to find that for Silnylon anyways...thanks for the idea!

I dont think butter cuts very well

The other part of my rope cutting combo is a nice lighter(aka the cheapest one i can find). I use that to finish off the ends if needed. You only need to be careful about really burning the rope or burning your fingers. For the ropes you mentioned the tape idea would be great but after the splicing.

I use a breakaway utility knife. There is a difference in the blades though, the house brand blades at Lowe's (Colbalt?) done' cut it. When it gets dull, just brake it and you have a fresh blade

Get a $5.00 ceramic knife from Harbor Freight. Works awesome. Stays sharp a long time and cuts amsteel like a dream.
    Good luck,
