Maybe you should clean the bird poop and stuff OFF of your tarp *before* you're going to be drinking the water from it...
I've heard that some folks wait until it has been raining a while before collecting water from their tarp, that way the tarp gets cleaned off a bit first.

The bow line is where the tensioner attaches to the tarp pull out. The other end of the guy line is terminated in a taut hitch.

Just FYI:
When I was at Home Depot the other day, picking up tubing for my gravity filter, I noticed they sold 10' lengths of stretchy latex tubing that could be used to make tensioners like the JRB tarp tensioners or the DIY version on Jeff's site. I don't remember the exact price but it was pretty cheap for the amount of tubing you got. It's in the plumbing section, near the clear vinyl tubing.

Lowes has the same stuff in the plumbing section, but there you can buy it by the foot. I just bought 3' the other day, and I think the price is $1.24/foot. My four year old boy loved it and was fascinated by it, he thought it was for a big sling shot

be careful of cold temps, some of the tubing loses its elasticity at cold temps, I had a slingshot band that was like this (I think it was latex rubber, but I'm can't remember for sure). After that, I throw them in the freezer and then check them after a couple hours, before I use them to make tarp tensioners. (Theraband's pass with flying colors).
