If we park at Hughes Gap we're in for a workout When I was on Katahdin I asked several thru's to name 5 mountains they remembered; Roan was on everyones list because of the climb out of Hughes Gap
In the meantime I'll call the park and ask if the state maintains the road to Carvers if at all.
My XC skiing friend from Bristol made it up there several times this past Winter with her front wheel drive Honda. I would not bet on the road being clear within the first day of a snow, but they usually clear out Carver's Gap within a couple of days since it is a state highway. Still, it might give me an excuse to push the button on my dash that drops me to 10 mpg but gets me most places.

Wisenber you're right. I noticed that the road had been plowed when I drove up to Carvers. The hike was Mon-Tues of this week and it wasn't that cold...one of those times when you go to bed and its in the 20's but wake to 30. The trail was mostly ice except where the springs were flowing over the trail.
