Why is 1" grosgrain so hard to find?

Gave up on trying to hem the sil on my new tarp and decided to try finishing the edges with 1" grosgrain. That's going pretty good but I ran out after just 2 sides. Searched 3 JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, Michaels crafts and a couple Wal-Marts. They all have 7/8, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2" but no one has 1". What's the deal? Of course Scott at Backwoods Daydreamer has my back so it's just a temporary setback. Sure would like to finish this thing! BTW, there's more than 36 feet of grosgrain for a blackbird cat tarp, more if you put it down the center seam.

I know what you mean. I think 7/8th is used in place of it for some reason.

I dont think this is what you ant to hear but you can always buy it online. I havent seen any place besides Joanns and Michael's that sell the 1" though i havent really looked. The down side to those versions is that they are very short only 18'. The stores that i visited also have a huge wall of ribbon and grosgrain.

and I think I was told that most of the ribbons (grosgrain and satin finish) these days are made with nylon, so almost any of them ought to serve well, you just have to pick your favorite color...KM (who is not inclined to stealthyness during hunting season..)

FWIW, the grosgrain I've gotten at Joann and Hancock fabrics are both a slightly looser weave than the 3/4" grosgrain I just got from Arrowhead Equip. Hard to describe, but the AE stuff looks/feels like a higher quality product.
Also, I use 3/4" via my binding foot attachment and it works great.

    Have you tried 3/4"?

Very true!! The stuff at Joann/ WM is much lighter/ thinner than the GG that I have purchased from OWF Inc. OWF/ AHE and other online places have the industrial version. It is thicker and stronger feeling.
I would trust the industrial stuff. The GG at Joann/ WM is more designed for clothing.

I stock it 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch in stock by the foot all the time and like mentioned above it is the higher grade stuff with a heavier duty weave than the generics.

And your pricing is way better than the local shops as well.

There may well be exceptions, but generally here's the scoop.

    Polyester GG comes in 1/4", 3/8", 5/8", 7/8", 1-1/2", and up...

Nylon GG comes in 1/2", 1", and occasionally wider.

Not sure why, but that's how you'll find it for the most part. I have both in my shop, the 1/2" and 1" is Nylon, and I have 1-1/2" in both nylon and polyester. Nylon is a bit stronger, and polyester is easier to find.

Either one does the job well for outdoor gear. Just steer clear of cottons and the like - horrible for stuff that sees weather.
