    splicing cord toogether ?

So I have four ten ft. Pieces of 2.2 lash it. I recently bought a second tarp and want to make a CRL for my tarp but I kinda don't wanna buy more cord and use what I got. My questions are,

How well does spliceing two seperate cords toogether work. And what are peoples opinion on how deep the burry should be in order for the CRL to hold while a lot of tension is being applied. Has any one tried this before?

Samson's site has the distances for the stuff if memory serves (they are the actual maker of it). I would probably be lazy and do 2 locked bummel buries set so instead of an actual eye at the end the to locking parts are together but that's just me.

Yep that is what I would do. I do not think the forces on the ridgeline would be a problem at all for that diameter cord. Pm me if you want me to walk you though it. I know there is a video out there of Opie doing it that was pretty good too.

ok, i had this same dilema, and so i came up with my own solution. i had a section of amsteel that was like 2 ft short to make my hammock ridgeline, and i was not about to bust into my new 30' chunk yet. so i did just like a fixed eye brummel splice, and made a locked brummel and then sliced the ends down the line. it is basicly the same as making a loop, but with 2 pieces instead of one big one.
let me know if that was really confusing!
    Thanks,
    Dan

i spliced 7/64 amsteel together to use in one of my suspensions.i used the same method as is used on the endless loops or chain links.the area spliced was used in the structural ridge line part of the suspension.hung on it many times is still intact.the only bad thing i can think of useing a spliced line is your prusics will need some fidleing to slide them over the thickened area of the splice.

Samson Rope has an excellent set of online tutorials for splicing various braids of rope. You can find it here http://www.samsonrope.com/splicing-instructions.cfm. They also have a dvd series on rope splicing.

I would do the same as already posted (locked brummels)!

Well it looks like I got some spliceing to do. Thanks for all the suggestions I figured a lock brummel would be my best bet. And yeah lonetracker getting the pusick over the thicker rope may be tough but what I'm hopeing works is locking my splice at the end of a ten ft cord on both sides (tarp rideeline is 10Ft) spliceing a ft on each side so the prusick is only really adjusted on the thicker part (I have no ideah if that makes sense in words but in my head it does) and stormcrow I got your # so if I do have any ? Ill give ya a call. Pics to come soon. Thanks every one.

Just tie a sheet bend or riggers bend/hunters bend.

I use this intentionally on the RL on some of my tarps. I have 2 pieces of line that are connected in the center of the tarp with a sheet bend. If the trees are normal size and spacing, I use it as a conitinuous RL. If the trees are large or too far apart, I split the line and tie it to the ends of the tarp.

You can end to end splice it if you want. It will hold just fine. The main reason not to is because zing it is so small and will be kind of a pain. If you splice it, make sure you stithc or whip the cross over. This will keep it from pulling loose when lightly loaded.

Just to be contrary, I'm going to disagree with the others and suggest using end-to-end splices in the middle, not locked brummels. That way you have an adjustable ridgeline. Separate the two buries by 6" or so, and bring the ends of the buried pieces out again like a whoopie or a UCR. (Knot the ends.) The buries shouldn't slip on you, and the doubled section between them gives you a place to hang something so it won't slide out of reach to the end of the hammock.
