Combine two gathered-end for a DL?

Is there a pitfall I may be missing in taking two sewn-channel hammocks, running the suspension through both to create a double-layer without sewing the two?

I'm not trying to avoid the sewing, I'm thinking about whether I could use my wife's hammock as a second layer on a trip in order to hold my pad and act as extra bug protection and warmth.

    Thoughts?

How are you gonna run the suspension through two channels? I can't visualize it at all.

Seems easier to get a seam ripper, hem the two pieces of fabric together (leaving an opening for pad insertion), then make a single channel.

I made a DL tablecloth factory hammock this way.

Has anyone just added a pouch to a SL to hold a pad instead of having the entire hammock DL?

Strap through the top, loop outside the channel, back in through bottom hammock. Simple.

Only problem I can see is if the hammocks don't fit together perfectly, you'll have sag between the 2, and the pad. If the the case, perhaps a loose whipping near the end of the loose hammock to tighten it up.

I've read about it, but I like the "pouch" to be full-length so I can adjust my pad (not that I use a pad anymore) from left/right orientation to right/left.

It'll work. You can do it several ways.
    Run two suspensions.
Do a normal suspension and a "mini" suspension for the 2nd layer. Prussik the "mini" to the mainline whoopie or strap.
Run 2 continous loops for each hammy and secure the whoopie or strap to both c.l.'s
Bundle them together ala "knotty's/warbonnets (or is it wb/knotty??) whipping method. The channel will prevent the suspension from sliding if bundled proper.

Or do as the op suggested, run the suspension line thru both channels and then do a larkshead. Tension the hammock channel well prior to sitting, to get full compression/gathering of fabric.

I was thinking about a continuous loop run through each channel. Perhaps run it through the bottom, then run each side through the top so they cross which would keep the top layer "inside" the bottom layer. From there, just do a lark's head and attach to suspension.

It sounds simple in my noggin.

The reason I wouldn't sew the two is because I'd like to be able to have two independent hammocks - one for me, one for my wife, but still have the option for double-layering when she doesn't go along.

I'll probably try it out and see what happens.

grannypat's suggestion might have merit, too. Maybe a sleeve of sorts for a pad that is held in place by from the peak and kept inside. It would need some sort of friction to keep it from sliding side-to-side, but my experience with pads is that they tend to slide up and down for me more than side-to-side.

I think having 2 hammocks only connected to the ends and the rest of it being otherwise disassociated, could be annoying. Maybe snaps, buttons, hooks and Velcro (which I'd prefer the least), would be a good, low/no sew, impermanent solution to make the hammock/s a tidier package.

+1 on the high annoyance factor.

Piece of cake. I use an undercover, basically another lightweight hammock with UQ attached, under my hammock. The undercover since it is not under any load is gathered with a continous loop which the hammock suspension is ran thru.
