I'm installing 3.5 inch thick fiberglass insulation upstairs and I'm going to have a bunch left over. Thinking of using it to make a uq. Has anyone else tried it?

R-13 rated btw
I would think that would be very painful in the long run, unless this is drastically different fiberglass insulation than I have dealt with in the past. I hate fiberglass slivers...
I also think it would be heavy for the warmth, and not as compressable as many other alternatives
I hate to be a nay-sayer, but I have to agree that this doesn't sound like a great idea.
That said, I'm betting nobody has tried it...so it can't hurt (much) to try it and report back!
It's been tried here, don't know where the threads are.
The main problem is that it breaks down quickly. In your walls and attic that's no problem, because it's not moved around and stuffed/rolled over and over. But for camping, it would be, and it will break down and lose it's insulative value.
It's also very heavy compared to current, more conventional options.
Finally, it doesn't do well with being wet. At least not like standard synthetic camping insulation options.
But... it's really inexpensive and you've got plenty. If you're fine with the drawbacks, I'd love for more fiberglass insulation guinea pigs to share better real world results here.

Construction-class fiberglass insulation?
You can test it out, and I think you'll be breaking new ground. Insulation used in quilts tends to be more apparel-class. (For jackets, blankets, etc.)
Common metrics for judging insulation are: weight, r-value, compressibility plus how it recovers loft after being compressed, cost, and workability. We haven't talked about "itchiness" yet, but may have to start.
I'm getting itchy just reading this thread.
Jbo
i'd be concerned about any fibers when compressing and breathing.
i've got a german shepherd, everytime i brush her i think about stock piling her fur just to see how it would work out.
