the matrix has you
Thanks for the report. I'm glad to hear you were warm in your quilts to the low 20s.
A couple of questions for clarification: You awoke cold and added a pad. But that was only because your feet escaped the quilt, and you wanted to get warm again ASAP? It wasn't because you actually needed the pad for warmth when you were in the quilt, is that correct? And you used an SPE rather than just the pad pocket on the Claytor? Why did you do that, rather than just use the pad pocket? Was it to get more side/shoulder coverage? Which quilts did you have, a Nest and NS, or 2 NoSnivs?
Thanks again for the test info!

BillyBob58,
Well it's hard to say whether or not I NEEDED the pad, but I was quite cold and decided I didn't want to chance taking a long time to warm up. I had an SPE with me with 1/4 inch grey pad inside and in the extenders. I thought it would be more comfortable setting on that than just a pad. I also had with me a home made quilt made from a Campmor down rectangular sleeping bag. The loft on that quilt is about five inches! So I had two backups with me, but I didn't even take the home made quilt out of the pack to use.
I did put the SPE in the pocket of the Jungle Hammock to check rumors that you cannot feel a pad when it is between the layers. Confirmed, at least with a 20 inch wide pad with 4" extenders. Felt just like the hammock.
It was not to get more shoulder coverage. Except for my feet that one time that they came out of the footbox I had no cold spots whatsoever. But there was no wind either. It was predicted that we would have strong winds but those came later when the sleet began in the afternoon. I was gone by then.
Finally, I have a NS and a Nest. Soon I will have a NS and a Speer Snugfit and Wendi will have a nest. Mule

Remember that when you flip a Claytor Jungle hammock, you are now directly on the waterproof material. Condensation could be a issue. I have had success just dropping the net into the hammock. The no-seeum is tougher than most give it credit for. I have indeed tested (unintentionally) the strength of it . Word to the wise, using a DAM raises you center of gravity considerably.

Are you certain that that layer is water proof? I don't think it is. I think one layer is nylon and one is Polyester, but the instructions say to turn it over and use it when the bug net is not needed. I don't THINK it is waterproof. Can you show us the documentation for thinking so. Thanks, Mule

Hey Skinner...I am also a Claytor hammock hangin' fool...welcome to the fold. I do have a question for you. In the picture with you in it I notice what appears to be a ridgeline of sorts running through the netting. How did you achieve that? I assume you poked a hole in the netting somewhere. I have often thought of doing that using a grommet for reinforcement. I'd like to have the ability to hang more gear inside the hammock netting on a tight ridgeline.
Thanks, Miguel
