I just make the taper, then measure & mark the bury afterward.

"By following the procedure below, the splice can retain from 90% to 100% of average new rope strength..."
I wonder. Are we really aiming for 90-100%? Seems overkill?
i did a little testing, results below
this is before i ever knew about the locked brummel, so the test was a (plain?) unstitched bury with no taper (also, was a single strand w/eyesplice in both ends)
7/64" ASB 2" bury, no taper (slipped at 1200#)
1/8" ASB 3.5" bury, no taper (slipped at 2100#)

Old thread here that contains the usual concerns and notions about the locked Brummel as part of buried splice. I found Warbonnetguy's post instructive about failure, with buries that were short. But, by failure we just mean slipping, not rupture. The short buries he used and tested still preserved about 3/4 of original strength.
But, the stimulus to post here was finding this:
I see you use a Mobius Brummel splice. How many have you had tested to failure? The last time I was at the testing facility at Samson, we proved that any brummel weakens the rope unacceptably. The rope ALWAYS fails at the intersection. The only thing to recommend that splice is that it does not need to be locked. Testing to failure shows that a simple tuck and bury splice is much stronger (it must be lock stitched however). The strongest splice was a total 63 x diameter bury, with the first 21 diameters untapered. These samples fail at random points, not always at the intersection of the bury

Notice that the first third of the bury, 21 diameters, approximates what Warbonnetguy used to get his tested findings some long time ago.
The message is that however much fun and whatever a feat it is to include a Brummel in the splice, leaving the Brummel out and stitching a long and well-tapered splice preserves the last bit of strength of the cord
Is it worth it to stitch? Your call.
FWIW there is also the issue of consuming length when making the bury. When I made the pair if whoopee's I have I aimed for the length of buy the instructions called for as a final length and consumed about 2 inches of 1/8' with the expansion of the outer shell as it is opened up to accomodate the line fed through it. In retrospect the bury length expansion was proboably figured into the marking instructions. OTOH the extra bury does not hurt and does help keep things together. My point is that whatever you measure you need to know that it will shorted when you feed line through the center.
