I have an unfinished basement. I drilled a hole halfway up the rafter, ran a piece of Amsteel with a fixed eye at each end through the hole and girth hitched to the rafter. Carabiner to the dangling fixed eye and attach a whoopie.

Unfortunately not the best scenery in the world but we rent

Hmm inspiration to buy a house

For your sake, G, I won't tell my wife it was your idea.

My thoughts exactly... I wonder if I can get away with this? A heck of a lot cheaper than a hammock stand, and a heck of a lot easier... And I actually have the tools to pull it off. Hmm.

I worry, though, that the place where I live is too old. It's also a rental... Probably a bad idea. But I'm going to think about it anyway.

A loop of seat belt material sandwiched behind aluminum spacers.
Easier to do if you notch the spacer plates...

We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..

If you can do it right the hooks can be discreet. Hang a picture of Hooch on it.
One of my "attachment points" is directly behind the curtains and is not noticeable when the hammock is removed.

I also did big eyebolts in the basement wall (2x4 stud walls) and those have been working.

My goal is to have hammocks in every room.

I would expect that with an eyebolt you would not have to worry about compressing the dry wall like a surface mounted pad eye would.
I've used the padeyes in two houses; on the ceiling in one and walls in the other and haven't had any drywall damage but I understand your concern. Maybe it's my sailing background but padeyes look more finished and proper to me than eyebolts.

When hanging from joists, most camping hammocks require about 22' feet of separation between the hang points. Less than that an there's way too much sag. Large Brazilians can go down to 12-15' because they're all about sag.

My room is above the garage so my ceiling is "the roof". Because of this there are 6x6 beams (I guess could be considered rafters) that go across my room. Lucky for me I can just throw my tree straps right around those and be hanging in no time!

Pic of me and the goldendoodle...cant see the beams though.

If it comes to your weight resting on a potentially load-bearing wall, don't take any chances. I recommend securing 2x4's horizontally to the studs you'll use with lag screws, then put eyebolts in the middle of the 2x4's for to hang from. The 2x4's will distribute your weight over a much larger portion of the stud, vastly decreasing the probability that you'll end up on the floor with a blown-out wall.
