So I thought I'd check by a nearby Walmart for some cheap fabrics. I was just feeling everything, because it's not labeled anyway, and I felt something that I though might be ripstop (I had bought some ripstop the day earlier so I somewhat knew how it felt). I bought it and I know it's not ripstop. It feels similar though, like some sort of canvas and is very light, same weight as my ripstop I'm sure. It seemed water resistant so I checked it.. VERY water resistant, water rolled right off.
So I went online to see how to check if it was waterproof. I came across this:

I performed the 'O' trick and couldn't blow through it at all! I quickly ran up and grabbed my ripstop and I failed on that one too. So I decided to put them to the ultimate test; I cupped each fabric and filled it with water. I only waited 20-30 minutes but the results seem fairly promising.
The ripstop was actually a little wet underneath. But after I dumped the water and felt, only one section felt wet, like it was waterproof but with a leak. The mystery material left maybe really slight moisture.
So, after this longwinded post.. are these waterproof? Are they not? Do I need farther testing? Can they be used for tarps? I plan on using a bit as a tarp just to see. (Really, THAT'S the ultimate test). And the mystery material is odd, it's fuzzy on the frayed side.. here's a picture:

Sorry that it's a bit blurry :/
