Are there any hammocks that have removable bug nets, that don't require a separate large net around the whole thing? I was given an old Speer that has velcro- removable bug net and I like that I have options, but it's very sticky and all that stuff that comes with velcro. . Has anyone made their own zippered removable bug net for a hammock? Has anyone done that to a Traveller?
Well its not exactly removable in the sense you can take it completly off. But 2QZQ have a mod 4 for the HH which allows you to completly un zip it and put the netting in a pouch by the food end.

The Switchback can be unzipped down both sides and then tied to the ridgeline up out of the way. Again, not completely removable in the 'leave it behind' sense.

A while back I built an HH-clone that I equipped with a removable bug-net and top-cover. I really loved the versatility it gave me:
- Bug-net when needed
- MUCH cooler without when no bugs are around, and
- Replace the bug-net with a top-cover in cold weather to add about 5* to your setup.
The versatility was great and I occasionally still use it (just used it last weekend as a matter of fact). The only downside was that the only zippers I could find long enough were pretty burly and heavy; resulting in a fairly heavy hammock.
I'm considering making a much lighter version this winter with a slightly different and lighter zipper system.

you need a custom made 2 way seperating zipper, those are custom from the zipper manufactuer, and i doubt you'll be able to find somebody to make you just one (could be wrong)Originally Posted by mountaingoat

Brandon, I don't get what you mean. Could I not get 2 long zippers and sew one on each side? I was thinking about getting the traveller and doing that. Please explain the zipper bit, if you have time. Thanks
the zipper has to be seperating (2 way seperating is what you want) it has to have that little "thingy" at the bottom of a jacket zipper that allows you to seperate the ends of the zipper and re connnect without removing the sliders. seperating zippers are avail in shorter lengths from places like owf and quest, but you're not gonna find a long one the correct length (something in the 117" range for the traveler). you'd also need the exact correct length because you won't be able to shorten it.
buying pain zipper by the foot has to be sewn closed on one end.
