If someone spent a hundred books on "x" but I was really wanting a "y"....I'd be left still wanting a "y."
How about subtle fishing (ok...maybe not so subtle unless he's really dense!) for what he might want from Santa?
Failing that, I'd go with a few cheapies (like the LED mini-lantern from JRB) and then a gift certificate. But if you get one from, say REI, and what he wants may be bought only from another vendor...so, how about one of those Visa card gift certificates.
If he's with HF...does he have an HF BUFF? (I have a spare, I'd sell for $20).
(But I have to find it first. It wasn't where it was supposed to be!)
You could put the cheapies - hiking xmas tree ornaments, for example - in a cute container. Google T-Fal One Egg Wonder pan. Then go to Youtube and see the guy who shows you how to make pizza/biscuits etc. in the pan.
In some of the Miami supermarkets, they have mini (ab. 6" diameter) non-stick paella pans with lids. I checked the Imusa site but couldn't find it, nor via google, but I saw them recently (in Publix supermarket, I think) for about $7.50. The advantage over the OEW pan is that it has two small grip/handles and not the long handle sticking out. Not that heavy either - I could weigh mine and report back. Sorry, don't do digital photography. I'll be taking mine to the FL Hang in Jan.
Or an HF Flag.
