    Hammock for son in law

Just made my first diy gathered end hammock. A double layer 1.1 camo ripstop, 56" by 123" with diy whoopies and an adjustable ridgeline. (7/64 amsteel). I like it. Slept out in it last weekend. (I am 6'0" and 160 pounds).

My son-in-law saw it and wants one for himself. He is 6'4" and 270 lbs. Would this hammock be strong enough for him? Are the 7/64 amsteel whoopies enough of a suspension for 270 pounds?

Or do I need to make up another double layer hammock out of heavier material and possibly longer/wider? And maybe bump up the suspension? Maybe just use webbing? Thinking about making him one for Christmas.

    Thanks,

    bri

The 7/64 line should be fine. I wonder about the stretch of the 1.1 material. Maybe make one out of 1.9 and make it about 11'.

    I'm 220lbs, and a single 1.1 holds, but a Double 1.1 should be better.

For comfort and durability I'd recommend a 1.9. If he is not a lightweight backpacker type that is.
You will get some stretch in the 1.1. But it can work.
I would go with the widest material you can find, 60+" wide is my preferred choice.
The suspension (7/64) is fine and I've used it for some time and I tip the scales at more than him. 1/8th will be fine too. And offer some security.

Big thing to remember for big folks, is that they need to treat their equipment gently. Shock load will result in failure.

he should be ok with it....i would feel more safe at that weight in a 1.9 ....
but as long as he doesn't jump in it he should be fine
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

Thanks for all the great help. I think I will make another one and go with 1.9 and 1/8" whoopies... and tell him not to jump into it. I will post some pics when it is done.
