    Gearskin?

    Hello,
    I've seen Dutch's awesome bridge hammock/gearskin hybrid, now I have a question.
    What's a Gearskin? lol

I can see that it's essentially a "backpack" that's been stripped down and redesigned to allow easy packing of ones shelter and sleeping gear.

I would like people to tell me about their gearskin experiences.

Sell the whole concept to me :P

I want to know what advantage a gearskin has over a normal Backpack.

    Dan

(I hope I haven't come across as arrogant, I'm just really curious)

No laughing at the old pictures, but here is a site I put toghether back a few years ago. It should explain the concept and help you get a feel for the build quality and other general things:

    advantages of a Moonbow Gearskin:

    1. fairly light weight - 1 to 2 pounds depending on fabric and option choice
    2. rather comfortable when balanced side to side and cinched down
    3. easy to get to gear / water bottles from the side
    4. enough straps to make it easy to add things to the outside of the pack - ex I typically hook on a bear canister
    5. depending on the way you pack it you save some weight in reducing the number of stuff sacks
    6. for a light weight pack it can carry heavy loads
    7. has a good hip belt and harness

I've been using one for several years and would not part with it.

If someone is a hammocker and wants to stick with a synthetic quilt and CCF pads the Gearskin looks like a no-brainer. Everyone who has one says it is the best pack they've tried. I'm thinking hard about getting one myself.

Hmm, looks like some good links to read through later.
I had a quick look at Brian's pictures. that helped to put things in perspective.

Hmm, What about rain? Just one pack cover?

It actually looks like it would be perfect for my planned trip in about a month, It's small, but able to carry a bulky load if necessary.

I know what I'll ask Santa for Christmas! o(^_^)o

for rain I use a Packa

other alternative is to stuff the gear in trash bags and then wrap the Gearskin around the trash bags

HOI, how do you like the packa? It is a little pricey but I realize it is a jacket and pack cover rolled into one.

i think building a gearskin into an HH supershelter or undercover would be a great idea. it wouldn't weaken the hammock and would allow you to pack up the entire hammock and even an underquilt (rather than a sleeping pad) and just use a sit pad as the back support.

    That's a good Idea.

I'm looking at a much loved 35litre daypack and wondering how to magically transform it into a Gearskin. lol
Does anyone have a rough Idea of the height and width of a standard size Gearskin...

I think Dutch may be starting a new trend.
