    Noob Question

    Okay, I get the theory on why a UQ works (not compressing insulation). And I liked the DIY design that's posted here (I might beg my wife to sew one up for me). But I'm a slow learner, so my big question is how do you attach the thing under the hammock? Is it bungied on? Does it tie to the side ties? Does the hammock feed through it? Velcro? Is it sewn right on? Duct Tape? Suction cups? Fairy Dust? Leave the ducks attached to the feathers and they fly?

    I did look and couldn't find the answer. So am I;

    a) a genius because I'm the first one to ask the question
    b) The answer is so obvious nobody but me has ever needed to ask the question.
    c) The answer is right here in the forums and I don't know where to look.

    I'm figuring the answer isn't 'A'.

    Most under quilts have shock cord on each end that attaches to the ends of the hammock. Some have the shock cord fed through channels that run the length of the quilt and some are just tied off on the ends.

    The shock cord loops attach via a small clip onto the suspension or on some hammocks, just looped over the big knot on the end of the hammock.

    There are a few fancier ways to attach an UQ like the hinges that pgibson sells at arrowhead equipment.

    Follow these steps: Click on the search tab at the top of the page. Click on advanced search. Type in "suspension" under key word(s). On the right hand side of the page under Search in Forum(s), highlight Bottom Insulation. Nine pages of info came up for me. Happy reading.

    I show how my DIY UQ is attached at the end of my video (about 8:45 minutes in shows it laid out on the ground and 10:15 minutes in on my hammock), if it'll help. I use shock cord and the S-biners, which behave in a similar fashion as the triangles thingies some folks use.

    Andy, I feel your pain.

    When I recieved my first uq, a KAQ, I just stood there, and scratched my head, asked for help, and managed to get it hung. My second quilt, by Stormcrow, went better, but not by much. Here's the kicker: in both cases, I ended up modifying the stock suspensions to get the results I wanted...one size fits all usually doesn't, at least straight out of the stuff sack.

    Gargoyle. Fairy dust. Who's surprised?
