    Leaving gear in the car

Would leaving my hammock and tarp in the car when not in use cause damage? They would be in stuff sacks and I really don't care if the stuff sacks get damaged by sunlight as long as the hammock and tarp don't suffer any damage. Also what about the extreme temps? I'm in Florida...

My guess is this isn't a good idea but I thought I'd ask.

Damage, no. Unless you routinely leave the car somewhere like Death Valley where it gets upwards of 120F regularly.

I'd be more worried the car would be broken into... a few friends have (different occasions over the years) lost a lot of hiking gear by leaving it in the car and having it stolen.

Exactly. And we are assuming you are keeping it out of direct sunlight.

I think the hammock would be fine. If the tarp has any water proofing on it it, it may degrade that substantially faster and cause delaminating of the material. Remember, the inside temperature of your locked car is much hotter here in florida than the outside ambient temperature. I recently had this happen with a Marmot tent fly.

If you were living somewhere more temperate, it probably wouldn't be a problem, but you might be pushing your luck with temperatures, a hot car in the sun in fl can hit 130-140f inside. I probably wouldn't leave any high-end stuff like OES Tarps or WBBB in my car, both from temperature concerns as well as theft.

If you really need to keep a hammock & tarp in your car for "just in case" think about getting some Amsteel and some 60" nylon from Walmart and making a simple gathered end + Structural ridgeline setup, and then some sort of cheap-ish tarp where it's not the end of the world if it delaminates or melts to itself or gets stolen.

I keep some gear in my car (duffel with oil, coolant, water (for me), 20*F sleeping bag, blue tarp) but none of my more fragile/expensive/favorite backpacking equipment that I would hate to lose or ruin.
