    Patrick,
Which of Mac's videos show this poncho-cape?

We might get rain at Mt. Rogers.
That sort of tough to describe.
They look like this. The bottom has a 104" circumference, and it is about 50" from the bottom of the hood to the bottom of the back.
I'd like to see one made of a lighter material, but oddly enough, the shower-curtain like material it is made from is actually stiff enough to not make it drape too much on you.
The front has five snap closures starting at neck level and leaving the last 10" or so unfastened on the bottom. The arm openings have two snap closures as well dividing the arm opening into thirds. The hood has several snap adjustments to all it to be secure and not used or open enough for a helmet or open enough for use without a helmet.

If you don't need to use your arms, the arm opening can be snapped shut for max weather protection. With the arms and top neck portion secured, it holds in more heat.

Since it is somewhat conical shaped, it lends itself well to fastening over and end of a hammock and held up with the ridgeline. This will keep more than 50" of your hammock shielded from any elements.

The fabric is so tough that I've also used it as a ground cloth under my hammock for storage.

    Hope that helps some WV.

How much snow did you get from this past snow storm? I was hearing reports of up 20" in the higher elevations on nc side of the mountains.

BTW, add me to the "yes" list. I am gonna make this come heck or high water!
It could be that the purpose of my life is merely to serve as a warning to others.

I don't know about Roan, but I just got out of Slickrock (about 2500" lower). There was a good 8"-10" on my vehicle on top of the 10"-12" that were already there when I arrived Friday. The nearest town on the NC side was -6° F when I got to my car Sunday morning. (I'm pretty sure it was colder than that where I stayed last night.) It was cold enough that the last time my camera worked was at the car Friday (I kept it in an outside pocket on my jacket but it and my Steripen failed.)

    Attendance List

Looks like we're getting close enough to compile the first list of potential attendees for Roan High Knob Feb. 11-13 2011.

Here is who I have so far:

    Yes

    Medicineman
    Wisenber
    MacEntyre
    ncwinterhiker
    Mister Dark

    Maybe

    NCPatrick
    hang um high
    Doctari
    Muskrat
    bike camper
    Jduncan
    Big Papi
    PuckerFactor
    aBRG2far

I'll put everyone under "maybe" until you let me know I need to put you under "yes".
Once we've gotten a bit further along, I'll need to know your projected arrival times. From there we can see if we want to collaborate on a few items such as food, wood, and possibly charcoal.

As we get closer, we'll have a better idea of the weather that weekend and the amount of snow on the ground. If it gets deep, snowshoes might help. On the other hand, several freeze-thaw cycles might make crampons more appropriate. We're sitting at five confirmed and creeping up ever so gradually....

It's getting closer now. Time to reserve you spot! Take advantage of Roan Mountain before it closes completely! Don't miss this final opportunity to enjoy Roan Mountain before the proposed resort development replaces the current shelter! Spaces limited! (OK, not really, but it does have a bit of a "marketing ring" about it.) I just thought I'd put a crass "bump" on this thread.
