2011 Roan Mountain Higher Colder Winter Hang February 11-13

Ok, here it goes. There has been interest expressed in having another Winter hang to test your gear and your mettle.

The proposed dates are February 11-13, 2011.
A specific site has yet to be selected, but this one will be higher and should be colder than the Mt. Rogers Hang.
The snow was still over 40" deep in March this year. It got up to around 6' of snow at times.

So once you've dialed you gear and and figured out to use it at Mt. Rogers, come try it out higher and colder here!

For a specific site I suggest Roan High Knob and for several reasons:
1.5 miles from Carvers Gap and an easy walk up/down....nicely graded so
even if deep snow snowshoes will do.
There is a shelter there if you need to 'go to ground'.
The number, spacing, and size of trees near the shelter are perfect for hammocking.
And there is a water source close to the shelter.

The few negatives include the knob being the highest point for miles and is a magnet for wind. This time of year it will seem very remote

I bet few will sign up for this one but for those who do I'm bringing sirloin. Maybe MillerGear can carry the charcoal this time.

Sounds like with the winds a bit more advanced "tarp know how" might be requisite. So how do those tarp pole mods work in heavy winds?

Well I never figured there would be that many people that would want to hazard Roan Mountain in the Winter since it is over 6000' and has such high winds and low temperatures. Frankly, it's not that easy and that does make folks shy away. It is definitely not for everyone.

However, it does present a challenge to a hangers gear and ability to use it properly. Most likely we will be close enough to some shelter if needed. The Roan Highlands also offer some of the most scenic vistas on the entire AT. (Roan usually makes most thru hikers top ten most memorable list.)

So you'll have to ask yourself, "Is Mt Rogers not cold enough, high enough or windy enough?" If you answer is "no" or "I don't know", Roan may be the ticket for you.

Now that the scary commentary has been made, this is basically going to be a smaller group hang than Rogers for those crazy enough to want to spend a couple of days up on a mountain to talk about hammocks and consume extremely high calorie food. ( This does not differ from my normal Winter backpacking with the exception that while I do normally eat extremely high calorie food, I am usually talking to myself about hammocks.)

At Mt. Rogers you can "hide" a bit from the wind if you get down into the rhododendrons... what's available up on Roan as far as natural wind break? Anything?

A quick google for images of the Roan High Knob shelter shows quite a bit of trees and and what appears to be rhodo. Medicineman would know more about it than I would. Still, I wouldn't expect to avoid the wind completely as the winds change direction quite a bit when times are good. When it's bad, it's fast and usually comes from the West.

Yeah, I figured there would be no way to really avoid getting hit by wind. Sounds like an interesting trip. I'm considering it.

Well if you decide to go and IF there happened to be a raffle, you'd need to be aware that the raffle would only be open to amateurs. (I've seen how you work!)

No more raffles for me! I'll just hang around for luck from now on. I think you or MM will have to take my place in the raffle department...
