Do you find you need shock cord down the entire length of the side or is pulling from the ends of the side enough? I found with my synthetics, I got better "hug" if I used shock cord all the way through, but now I'm more weight conscious than I once was, so I'm wondering. I'm going to make it ready for both methods, but what have you found?

the first synthetic i made i only tied off at the corners, which didn't work too well. then i ran a channel and it worked. for my latest down i ran 1/8 the whole length. i would think you need it the entire length simply to help shape and preventing the UQ from going flat. have your thought about using D rings or fabric at the end with 1/8 but then running a smaller diameter like 3/32 along the length? it's probably half or third the weight.
Channels work best for me. I tried tying only on the ends of my diy kaq synth and it did not fit as well as it did with the channels. On my down uq, I went only with channels.
I guess it all adds up, but to me channels are part of the function so shedding weight their is like leaving a jacket at home to save weight.
I run 1/8" shock cord through side channels only and then run 1/8" draw cord (much lighter) from the quilt to the hammock knots. I find that this gives me the right amount of stretch. Using all shock cord has the potential to have too much slack but some shock cord is needed to hold the quilt to the hammock and still stretch when you roll over, without damaging the quilt.
I don't attach the quilt to the cord. This way I can slide the quilt toward the head or foot to fine tune the adjustment. This is important since my quilt only goes from my neck to my knees.
Yeah, I keep my synths in channels 'cause I like being able to slide it where I want it.
Anybody tried using a non stretch super lightweight cord through the channels then just a small piece of shock cord or something stretchy for a short piece near the suspension for taking up slack?

it could work. Mads version should work as well. If I'm not confused, I think his would work better. Shock cord inside the channels and something lighter on the ends. you'll get the "flex" where you need it and save a few grams.Originally Posted by jbo_c

The length of shock cord I use is equal to the length of the UQ, when the cord is relaxed. When riged on the hammock, the cord stretches and that gives me the adjustable track I need.
