Just took the WBBB Plunge

The Edges are excellent tarps, as are the MacCats.

I think most of it is that people want the best gear from multiple sources. There is certainly something to be said about "cyclical crowd behaviors" and I've seen them at play here often over the past few years. However, some products are just plain solid. Say what you will about OES's customer service at times, but his tarps are legend in this community for good reason. The Edge is no slouch, but not as well known.

Besides, I didn't have an Edge handy when flyboy was over playing with hammock gear.

I got the MacCat deluxe because it was just a bit bigger than the Edge (130X104 vs 126 X94). I was using a Trek Light Double which is 10 ft. long, and was planning to get a WBBB which is also 10 ft. long. I liked the extra few inches of length and width. The Mamajamba is bigger at 132 X 120.
I was also planning on getting a 12 X 15 OES cat cut tarp to use as a river kitchen tarp, so I had my big tarp needs covered. This tarp can become my winter tarp if I start doing some winter hanging.

True enough! I put in an order with Brian over at OES about two weeks ago based on the glowing reviews of his tarps on this forum and still haven't heard a thing! I know things often take time on his end, so I'm content to sit it out for a while - I know how tough it can be to be a graduate student!

I have tarps from both OES and Warbonnet - the OES tarps are, to be honest, over-built. They are reinforced to such a silly degree that you'd probably tear the silnylon clean in half in the middle of the tarp before you'd ever rip a single stitch out of one of the tieout points.

That certainly gives you confidence in your tarp.

The Warbonnet tarp is reinforced very well, and I've had my Big MJ in some obnoxious winds without ever having any fear of damage. So, in that sense, there's a slight weight savings with the Warbonnet, by not having what probably amounts to extraneous reinforcement on the OES tarp.


My general advice would be to go with whichever manufacturer is more convenient, for the standard hex tarps, since both are excellent products, and go with OES if you want some wacky custom design.
