    Best line for ridgeline/tieouts

    Quick question:

I did some searching and couldn't find a good answer to it: is there a good go-to line that everyone uses for a tarp ridgeline and tieouts? ...Something strong and light? Amsteel blue looks really good but I feel like it'd be overkill for just hanging a tarp...

A lot of folks use 1.75mm Lash-It or Zing-It (same product, different color) for tarp ridgelines. It's made from Amsteel, just a smaller size than that used for hammock suspensions. On the cheap side, mason line is plenty strong enough.

For tarp tie-outs -- mason line, lash-it, Speer no-tangle, or Kelty triptease all work. It's really what you have available or want to spend.

    Hope this helps.

I use 2.2mm Zing-It for my tarp's single line ridge line and for all guy lines. I like the yellow color better than the gray Lash-It, and I like the size better than the 1.75mm size Zing-It/Lash-It.

Mason line would be fine, but I wanted something I'd buy and apply once. Not sure mason line would last over time. It didn't on my tents.

I've purchased all of my Zing-It (I'm on my 2nd roll) and Amsteel Blue from Redden Marine. They have a discount code for HF.net members (don't remember the code off hand - a search will find it); and they ship FAST! I made my last order on a Monday morning and was splicing line on Wednesday afternoon - that's fast...

    Strong vs Tough

How abrasion resistant is cord like Amsteel? I know I can probably lift an elephant or tie up spiderman with the stuff but how does it hold up with time and use?

Right now I'm just using some 550 cord outer (inner 7 strands removed). It's relatively light, strong, cheap, and abrasion resistant. I picked up some braided mason line for the tieouts and it seems to work well but it's really soft. I'm afraid that snagging/rubbing on tree bark will cause it to fuzz pretty bad if used for ridgeline. It's cheap enough though I could just cut a new piece each season and be out a whopping $0.25.

Do you guys end up making any kind of "cord protector" from 550 cord sheath or something similar? Any feedback is welcome before I shell out for some Amsteel.

I use 1.75mm Zing-it or Lash-it (same stuff, diff. color) It holds on small metal figure 9's. Strong, doesn't stretch and lightweight 0.9 oz per 50'.

My amsteel does not/will not touch trees, so I'm not worried about it abrading against the bark (tough old post oak trees in my yard). My amsteel whoopies/UCRs have shown no wear in the short time I've used them in conjunction with 1" straps and toggles.

My zing-it tarp line has been around the oaks about 10 times now and looks brand new. I've given no thought to coring some para-cord to make a sheath for it.
