Today I went out and looked at my DIY gathered end hammock made from Joann nylon. I guess it rained here when I was away. To my surprise, the hammock had a puddle of water in the bottom of it. I looked at the underside and saw no weeping of water. I guess the Joann ripstop is DWR though it is not advertised as such.

If it's DWR, the water would bead. Chances are, it's just naturally water resistant due to the weave...and/or maybe it's been calendered.Originally Posted by cosmicmiami
The crucial piece of information here would be how big is the puddle? It would not be surprising to me if the hammock would retain a half inch or so of water with no load. I would find that within my own experience of nylon performance. Particularly if it is nylon taffeta. Now if it had a couple of inches over the majority of the bottom surface then I could see it being treated somehow. But even then under no load the weave is pretty tight and the surface tension pressure on the water surface would be the ambient air pressure so it might hold the water reasonably well.
When weighted the weave of the fabric would stretch and open the pores more. That would be the real test. Go lie in the puddle (unless you already dumped it out which would be my first instinct) and see what happens, other than your clothes getting wet and absorbing the puddle yourself of course. I would not trust anything not labeled as treated to function as a tarp one way or the other so I don't know how much you would learn from the above experiment.

I can easily reproduce it with the hose though. Maybe I will. In fact, I will take one for the team. Lay down in the hammock, fill it with water and see what happens. Give me a couple days and I'll report back.

I would just put a weight in there with water to stress the fabric.
25 gallons of water would just about equal my weight. Maybe I'll go that route. We'll see. Working tomorrow so Sunday would be the test date at the earliest.

It is quite amazing the force with which raindrops can hit a tarp. Standing water is a very different animal than active rain. Hard rain has been known to mist through silnyl. They are two very different scenarios.
