    The Return of Tobit

Hey folks, I am back somewhat.

As some of you may remember, I threw in the towel on backpacking (again) a year or so ago. As I often do, I get frustrated with some of my health issues when I can't do the hiking I want to do.

For 2011, I think I am finally going to push myself through the gout and arthritis and start getting outside again on the trails again. I need to loose about 50 pounds and hiking will be easier as well. Just need to keep my buttocks motivated I guess and it will all work out. With major diet change, my gout isn't as big of an issue as it once was. Just need to get my stiff joints and stuff figured out and I will be much happier and more motivated. I'm way too young to give up on hiking now.

    Anyway..

Are they any new folks around making cool new gear that I should check out? I still have my DD Hammock but I think I will be upgrading to a Warbonnet Blackbird as I see he is now doing a thriving business. I'm going to need new quilts as well. mikeinfhaz made my last two a long time ago. I don't know if he is still around or if anyone else is making custom quilts these days.

So just thought I'd say hello, I will be lurking around and adding my 2 cents and questions here and there. I see Shug is now an interwebz celebrity and has a bunch of YouTubes, I off to check them out now.

Welcome back. As a former NH-er, I miss New England terribly. Great hiking and beautiful scenery. Shug's vids are spot on and over-the-top. I can't stop watching them. Welcome again!

    Welcome back Tobit.
You won't be disappointed with the Blackbird.
As for some new folks making stuff, there is a stable full of new thoroughbreds enabling our addiction.
Check out the "Hammock Gear-Manufacturers and Services" forum.

Welcome back. I, too, have gout/arthritis issues. I used to get frustrated at not being able to do the miles I used too. Now I do in one or two nights what most can do in a day . But that's okay. I'm still getting out and you know what? I enjoy it more now than when I was younger and healthier. Stop and smell the roses, slow and steady. These are my mottoes now.

Welcome back. The BlackBird is great hammock. Understand your frustration as I have also had a bad last year health wise that has limited my hiking.

Just have to remember that I am not as young as I used to be and have to slow down on the trail (makes for a good excuse to take some pictures of the hike).
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

Yeah, I live in a 3rd floor walk up flat. Plenty of stairs.

and make that 60 lbs. I'd like to lose, looks like I gained 10 lbs. from the Thanksgiving festivities. Ugh.

Thanks for the welcome backs everyone.

    Welcome back!
Just enjoy the outdoors as your body allows. I'm sure it will increase w/ time.
I enjoy camping more than hiking myself, although I kinda like to hike a little to get to a camp site better than just car camping most of the time.
But car camping can be fun too.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Today I pulled my now close to three year old DD Travel Hammock out of the closet and hung it in the loft above the garage. It still hangs very nicely just like I remember it. I'm still debating upgrading to a Double 1.7 BlackBird as I would like just a little more leg room and prefer bug netting arrangement on the BB compared to my DD.

Meanwhile, I am talking with couple folks to have three custom quilts made; I need a winter UQ, a winter TQ, and a summer TQ. Wait, you hear that? That's the sucking sound coming from my wallet.

Joe @ ZPacks is currently building me a custom cuben fiber tarp. I have a thread on this in the Weather Protection sub-forum.

Exercise is going well and weight is slowly coming down, hopefully I will be back in the woods soon. All I am asking is the snow starts falling just a few more weeks later so I don't have to buy snowshoes right away either.
