    Winter day hike hang

Well I guess I need to post in here, even though this was just a day hike, it is still considered a trip....just doesn't seem to belong in the general section.

First off I want to thank this forum, had it not been the fact that I had a hammock I would not of considered doing what I did today. I guess the thought of being of the ground while out in the snow is appealing, and that is what is making me even contemplate winter type hiking. Usually I just go for a quick walk around but never to the extent that I did today.

Anyway we have been having our bought of snow last week, and with a foot of accumulation I just had to get out and go for a hike. I packed my gear and some lunch headed out to a natural preserve area about 3 miles from my house.

I hiked in and then set up. A: to see how things will go during the Mid winter hang in central astern Wa I plan on attending, B: to get some more practice. C: just cuz I thought it would be fun to cook out in the snow while sitting in my hammock looking at all the wonderful beauty of the snow and the woods. So I got everything set up and then proceeded to make some chili and hot cocoa.

I tried a different way of hanging the UQ and I am not sure how that is going to work out, so some more tinkering with that. In the pics it looks really extreme, but actuality when I lay down in the hammock it flattened out and I was able to adjust it to where it hugged my body very well. And there were no air gaps. But I didn't get to play around too much with it so more to come.

I am really happy with the way I was able to hang the tarp. Since I learned all those new knots (thanks to this forum) it went up like a breeze. I pitched it high and flat so I could see out. Of course if I was to sleep out here I would have pitched it at more of an angle and enclosed.

I am very disappointed in the way the hammock itself hung though. For the life of me I could not get the angle right. the RL was just way to tight no matter what. I must have messed with it for 45 mins or so and just could not get it right. I tried all sorts of things...oh well that's what learning is all about. It didn't really matter though because I was only using it for a chair any way.

All in all a good hike, and it got me out and about. I think I will do an over nighter here in a weekend or two in the same area

    Heading in from the TH.

I miss my 4.8Lb base weight as a ground dweller...But I sure DON'T MISS the ground.

Dry runs are important for winter prep. Your base set up seems sound. Keep tweaking and you'll find the right combination. I'm looking foreword to the big hang.

Anytime you can get out into the woods. To tweak and peak your gear is good time in my book. Thanks for taking us along.
