Whoopie as UCR--One in the same

Regarding something I noticed when making some whoopie slings for my new hammock suspension, I mentioned that a whoopie sling could be fliped over to form a UCR--that the name is a matter of application and not design...

This is not strictly true unless you cut the line on the adjustable loop end to make it two separate pieces of rope, but I can't imagine why you would do this, as it works fine with the loop intact.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I've drawn up a diagram to illustrate...

The diagram shows the same ~6' whoopie (made from a 12' length of amsteel) in both configurations.

    Hope this clears things up!

Provided you can keep some kind of tension on the fixed eye loop end of the constrictor this would definately work. Thanks for sharing.

Well I gave it a try last night. I reworked a set of slings by putting a fixed loop on the adjustable end and added a few inches to the constrictor. I used the other existing fixed loop to hang a small stuff sack to keep the constrictor from moving. In the future I'll add a little klemheist loop to secure the end instead as I did on my UCR. No problems hanging last night and looking forward to further testing.

I think it'll be very handy to extend the maximun length of the sling should the need arise. Good to have options. It's funny no one has suggested this in the past. Thanks a lot!

Good idea, Jackleberry. Odds has noted the advantage this gives, too: extension of the hanging rope without the added weight of a longer whoopie sling. I use nacrabiners made from bungee cord to furl tarps and also to tie up the long ends of my whoopie slings. Could use one for an ad hoc prussic to maintain tension on the UCR. Thanks for suggesting this.

Griz, can you help with problems of air infiltration with my Klein Quilt system?

When I reworked my slings I used the MacDonald brummel to avoid undoing the existing fixed eye loop. Its really handy to know this technique. Check it out the pics here.

Yeah, that's the method I ended up using too. Makes the others look overcomplicated.
