The Velcro UQ

Has anyone tried this yet?

I first read about the idea from Bradley on Shane's "First Cold Hang" thread and thought it deserved some attention on its own - http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ghlight=velcro

I think it has really great potential. For me, attaching my UQ (Incubator) using full length velcro strips would help:

- Dial my UQ depth perfectly
- Seal in valuable heat that can escape from shockcord suspension
- Allow the UQ to finally move with you
- Make it so I don't feel the shockcord line squeeze again

It's a really intriguing idea to me. I'm not quite ready to put my WBBB under a sewing machine, but perhaps there's other ways to adhere the length of a UQ to a hammock? Velcro seems to be the best permanent solution if it's something that works out however.

Again, it's not my original idea ..... but I love it's potential.

Hmmm, I suppose I could see this working for a full length UQ. But w/ my 3/4 UQ, I find I need to adjust it from time to time as I move/shift around in order to keep it properly at my shoulders. If it were velcro'd into place, it would be a real pain to adjust on the fly.

Does the cold affect velcro?

Well that's the whole thinking behind the velcro.... the UQ now shifts with the hammock walls, removing the need for any adjustments. I'm also not aware of any temperature limitations to velcro.

This is a full length synthetic underquilt my wife made last year. It has velcro the entire length down each side. My son and I went on the AT approach trail last January to backpack and I took it with me. One night it got down to 12 degrees. I was in a Clark NA with a Western Mountaineering Alpinelite 20 degree down bag. This underquilt has 550 cord drawstrings on each end to seal it.

Interesting...I haven't seen anyone who's actually done this. What width is your UQ? Do you have any problems with it sagging too much depending on how you're lying?

The width is roughly 4 feet velcro to velcro. The length is 6 feet 4 inches. I don't seem to have a lot of trouble with sagging. If I don't make sure all of the velcro is securely attached completely down the sides, it will work it's way loose in spots. After I snug up the end cords, there is enough cord to tie it off on my suspension cords. This helps to hold it in place too. The Clark models have pre-existing velcro sewn on the edge outside for their Z Liner. I use this velcro to hold the quilt in place from the waist down, and the velcro already in place for the pocket closures to hold the UQ in place from my waist up.
