    Hello from Northern California

I joined a few months ago and have been spending a lot of time here reading and watching video. Last summer we meet up with my brother camping for the week at Lake Trinity. He brought a few hammocks and one good nap started the down fall. When I got home I was at Costco and they had a guy there selling hammocks. Most were the rope kind. He did have a box of camping hammocks. $40 dollars later I had a double hammock. It was the middle of the summer so it was hot. I tried to sleep all night but could not get the whole thing working. I was either too cold or too hot. Then I used my Thermarest with little air and a blanket. It worked pretty good. Then I found a place up on my deck where I could hang under the eves. Before long I was sleeping out there three or four night a week. My brother and mother made me a DYI UQ. What an improvement. About that time it started to get cold at night so I had not been sleeping in my hammock as much. Last week I finally found a place in my house to hang. Just finished it and will probably sleep there tonight.

I ordered a WBBB 1.7 double layer. It is my Christmas present so my wife won't let me sleep in it. My mother and brother are making me a top quilt for Christmas. I have made two sets of whoopie slings. This weekend may be my first camping trip with the hammock.

I have noticed that most photos show a tarp over the top. When I was sleeping outside I enjoyed the stars. Do you have to use a tarp? Is the tarp for dew or rain? I figure I will need a tarp so I thought I would start with a Kelty Noah. Which size would you recommend?

    Thanks

Welcome to the board and enjoy the Christmas surprises.

I will try to answer the question about tarps. I like tarps for wind and rain protection. The areas that I usually camp get rain just about every afternoon and the wind makes an appearance from 11:00 - 15:00 daily. This causes a problem for me if I leave my gear set up without the tarp. I can always roll the tarp up in the evening if the skies are clear. I usually just lift one side so I have some sort of view but the tarp has been deployed on every trip so far. I don't like waking up in the middle of the night because I'm being rained on either.
What size? - I have a couple of tarps and I like them both all of the time. I think it will take me a little more time to figure out which one I like most. Right now I'm loving the large tarp with beaks. It covers well, helps keep me comfortable and out of the elements.
    Hope this help.

Welcome! It sounds like you have jumped in with both feet!

The necessity of a tarp is a local climate thing. If you live in an area that doesn't get regular rainfall and the dewpoint isn't reached at night, then no tarp is needed. But you will need one in your kit for "just in case." If the above conditions are true and if you backpack, then you will want the lightest minimal tarp.

Friday night I am going with some scouts to a campground by Bodaga Bay. I am concerned about dew. I have a rain fly from a tent that I am going to try. It is not a great answer but I have it and it was free. I will pick up a Noah when I drive through Reno. I have some Cableas points so it will not cost me much. If it rains this week end I do not think the scouts will go. I have never been to this camp ground so I hope there are trees.

I think it is called Doren Park. It is out on a small piece of land. I am not sure there will be trees big enough to hang. If not we will see how well they can lash.
