Advice on WB tarp

Thanks again! I like that rule of thumb and I do indeed camp more than I hike (off kayaking for a week for Christmas, yey!) plus when it rains here it can rain for days on end. I miss Florida weather! Don't miss all the bugs and beasties though - believe it or not man is the only creature in NZ that kills, there are no native mammals or snakes, and even the spider bites just hurt like a !@#$. Still find that hard to get used to! So it looks like you have talked me into the Superfly. Decision made (I think)!

Why not split the difference and get the mamajamba?

If you're having too much trouble deciding, get both! But get the Superfly first, because you can always pitch a large tarp for ventilation, but it's harder to really button up a small diamond tarp.

A NZ native "half-brother" who has spent 40+ years tramping around NZ laughs at my stories regarding bears, coyotes, coons... He has some great stories about the "killer" possums and rabbits he has encountered. His main concern is petty theft, auto break-ins and the best fishing streams have the worse mossies.

If the SF was available in Spinn or maybe Cuben that would be my choice for wetter weather. But even stuck for days under an Edge size tarp beats any packable tent.

I have The Edge, Big Mamajamba and doors for Big Mamajamba. If I had no tarp I would get the new Super Fly with incorporated doors.
If I were to have two tarps I would get The Edge and the new Super Fly with incorporated doors.

I think the SF is a good choice. I'd rather have a little more coverage and carry a tiny bit more weight.

OK, it's done, Superfly is ordered! Now I just have to contain my soul in patience until it arrives (and save up for an Edge too)! And yes, those NZ bunnies can be vicious!!! I've got my fair share of rattlesnake, bear and panther stories already anyway

I finally got to use my new Superfly! Took a little while to cut and tie the guy lines and figure out the best way to hang it, but I love it! We had torrential rain all of the first night with strong winds and I stayed dry as a bone. My friend's tent flooded. The next day was just drizzle and again stayed dry. I used my kayak paddle to elevate one side of the tarp so I could see out while I was hanging out in the afternoon (excuse the pun) and it worked fab! It looked like an elevated tent and had about that level of coverage, which I really appreciated in the crappy weather. One very happy camper here
