does that make any sense? any thoughts?

Yeah, that makes sense. I did the same thing at first--over tightened it. I don't lay as much on the diagonal as you do in the blackbird, but I do lay on my side a lot. If it is too tight, it gaps sometimes when I change sides. When it's right it stays against the hammock.
I guess you could just loop the cord over the whipped ends. The biners are just convenient.

no i'm not saying i got gaps at the bottom. what i'm saying is that i tightened it so there were no gaps, but that made the end taper in so that i'm pretty sure one of my legs was off the UQ earlier than it should be...

how else can i explain it hmmmm

I think I understand. It's as if the shape of the quilt is not asymmetrical enough match your diagonal lay. If thats the case, it seems like it would fit better a little loose rather than tight. I wonder if you could suspend it offset ?

yeah not even that it's not asymmetrical enough, just that it ends up too skinny down near the feet when drawn up tight... wonder where that sweet spot is b/c sealed up to keep in the heat and opened up to cover my legs

so i had this UQ out in relatively cold temps friday night. the temps were in the low 30s but the windchill was massive. easily gusting to 60mph. my back was nice and toasty all night long. occasionally i would have a gust of wind send a little chill down my back. this was unavoidable with any UQ though, so i have no issue with that...

the only nitpicking i have with this is:

so i lay on a pretty steep angle in my hammock. i find it the most comfortable this way regardless of whether it's a blackbird or a traveler that i'm in. the UQ does a super job of sealing up my torso, however my legs don't go off the bottom of the underquilt due to my angle. my right leg is off the UQ a little bit above my knee due to the angle i lay. is there a way to keep the bottom section of the crowsnest off to a slight angle but keep the top part the way it is?

    HMMMM

You are probably having to pull the suspension cords out instead of up. You need to loosen the ends of UQ and get it to pull up to wrap around the hammock more. It helps to get the UQ asym if you can adjust each corner individually. With a big asym hammock the end cords on the UQ should not have to be tightened very much if you can get it to pull up more.

I came up with the triangles to solve the problem you have been describing. You don't have to use triangles just do something to get the suspension cords to pull upwards a little bit more. You can see in the pics in the link that the legs are covered.

for anyone who searches this. i weighed my crowsnest and am fairly certain they mailed me a winter version. it came in at 20.9 ozs without the sbiners

so don't expect that sort of loft in the 3 season
