    Hennessey Stand Alone Tarp??

I am going on a weekend backpacking trip in 2 weeks. Its going to be in the low 20's and I dont have the insulation system to hang yet at that low a temp so I am going to ground.

Rather than bringing a tent I was thinking about using the tarp from my standard Hennessey Asym as a shelter.

Has anyone ever tried this? If so, how did it work?

It would keep you dry if it sprinkled. I wouldn't want to be under it in heavy rain. It provides minimal - but effective - coverage in a hammock, but I would imagine that it is less efficient with you on the ground and strung up similarly to how its done with the hammock. Good excuse to get a new tarp!

The insulation you use there may just work in your hammock...

What are you using for ground insulation?

And, you are talking about the asym tarp, right?

I've tried several ground pitches for the asym. They are all small.

My son once slept under the asym pitched as a diamond fly.

The following picture is another pitch that "maybe" could work for you if you extended it somehow (maybe with a poncho). It's very limited on room. And you have to add a tieout to the middle of one of the long sides. If the asym was a little bigger, this is how I'd go to ground with it. I've got another thread trying to figure out how to combine two asyms in order to do this.

the hh makes a great tent i used it as one a few times on the pct
use your treking poles to hold up the tarp n hammock as you would to a tree. there is tie outs on the hammock to use for stakes
look at the hh website they show a great picture of what im talking about

just set it up in your backyard before you leave

Thats for the replies. I have a Therm-o-rest Prolite4 with homemade 'wings' on the sides for extra torso warmth. I have used it down to almost freezing and found that to be about my limit in the hammock. On the ground I am fine with it much lower. My Western Mountaineering Ultralite keeps my plenty warm down below its rating of 20 degrees.

I just bought me a ULA pack so funds are a little short to be buying a new tarp, but I have my eye on a few nice ones for the future.

Right now I am just trying to get through the Boy Scout backpacking trip next weekend. Now the forecast is calling for warmer temps but rain ALL weekend. I may consider the hammock again if that is the case.

I really need to just break down and get me a Jacks-r-Better quilt and be done with it!
