    Insultex scraps for UQ?

I saw a post on the evil Facebook by AHE, where copious quantities of IX scraps were mentioned. Since I hate waste, I started trying to figure out what could be done with them. I wonder if you couldn't use them to make a UQ, kind of a hybrid between down & IX sheets. Cut the scraps into 1" pieces & use them to fill your UQ. You'd have to have baffles, but it seems like it would help with the condensation/breath-ability issues.

Now, someone smarter than me tell me why it won't work...

It might work. Probably have to be real small baffles, maybe a box-quilted version, to keep the bits from just stacking in a corner like so many playing cards.

Oh, and by the way, they were Climashield scraps that were mentioned.. that post got my gears turning too.

I was looking at my IX trimmings last night (making a 3-layer UQ based on Sclittlefields sticky...)

I would bet that long, thin strips would do better than confetti, as they wouldn't stack..

Baffles would work, or you could just take 3 layers: inner 2 sewn through to make tubes that would be filled, and an outer layer to keep the sewn lines of the other 2 from leaking heat?

You really don't need to fill the tubes, just keep them open by 1/4" to trap heat...

    Hmmm.....

+1 for JohnSawyer's ideas... I've considered just what he suggested.

Pedro has several bags of IX scraps that I traded. He reported great results from a first effort supplementing an UQ.

    Are you there, Pedro?
