    Cold Weather Test #4

This place reserved for my next Cold Weather Test.

This is so if you guys don't see a post from me in a couple days, you can give me grief for either wimping out, or being too lazy to post.

We are expecting 2"-4" of snow, and I'm going to try and "bridge" again (with a bridge sock!) on my back yard testing grounds.

I would really appreciate a review and pics of the bridge sock...

I am think of making a "winter cover" that mimics the dimensions of the omnitape bug netting that comes with the JRB BMBH but make it with zipstop nylon.

I don't intend it to be additional insulation but more of a wind screen.
    Love my JRB BMB

is it funny or morbid that i chuckled when i read "wimping out, or being too lazy to post" and didn't see "or died in the middle of the night from the cold..."

jk... seriously... don't die. I would feel like such a tool if that happened lol
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I have not lived.

I did think of posting something along those lines...but I've survived 3 backyard tests below zero (32F) so far, and I'm pretty sure I'm smart enough to crawl back into the house and into a warm bed if things got too rough.

Though, since I've never dealt with real hypothermia, I guess I wouldn't know if I was smart enough.

Honestly, besides being very dehydrated in the morning, sleeping outside in this cold has been rather refreshing.

haha, well that is a scary thought that will rattle around in my semi-hypochondriatic head next time i am feeling cold at night

I agree with you though... waking up on those really cold mornings does amazing things to all your senses that are hard to replicate other places. I think its the smell of crisp mornings in the woods that gets me the most.

    Good luck to ya!

I'm still working out how to use the bridge sock. Mr. Dr. Prof. Griz-Hammock made it sound really easy, but when you have it in your hands it's like a closet made out of cloth with a big zipper on it!

So I need to figure out how to get the thing on first!

I'll report back soon. I just heard snow is coming Friday night, so maybe Saturday morning...that is if I don't expire before then.

try it when the wind is up!

If it's any help, here's a picture from the archives of the sock trying to move my front yard west to Iowa

Looks like the pole ends may be inside, whereas the instructions I gave had them outside. Shouldn't matter. I'm reasonably sure the problem you're having is just getting through the tub from one end to reach the hammock end on the other side and slide the tube on. I don't know why it isn't easy, seems like it ought to be, just all that fabric I think.

There are pictures of the next generation bridge sock in the gallery as well,
    here's one

I'm camped out in the bridge now, listening to the snow pile up and slide down the tarp. It's in the teens now, I expect low teens to single digits by 5am.

    I'll report in come morn.

Oh, and I did bring the NIKON.

Seems not to have survived the night. Too bad, seemed like a nice guy...

then again, perhaps he's so comfortable, he's still asleep.

Or even, if he gets up he knows She Who Must Be Obeyed will hand him the shovel and ask to get the car dug out. So he's staying put.

But he posted from inside the rig before, no word now, bad news.

    Brush back a tear all.
