New Hammocker

Hello Hammock Forums!

A few months ago I stumbled upon a DIY hammock on a website called "instructables" and I made the hammock and also picked up a tarp. It all seemed to hold up pretty well, but I still have yet to test it while camping because I don't want it to fail in the middle of the night. I saw Hennesseys Christmas sale where you buy a hammock over $140 and you get a Scout Classic free, so I might check that out. Should I stick with DIY Hammocking? Im leaning towards that but I want a good piece of kit as well. Tell me what you think, world. Thanks in advance.

From what I have read DIY projects do not necessarily save money but are rather done for the satisfaction and fun of it. I think it is good to have proper gear though if only to see whats out there and get some ideas about how stuff is made. You can always sell it if you do not like it. New gear can also cause you to want more gear so be careful as well. Many of us started with one hammock but now have mulitples.

Welcome to HF! When properly made DIY hammocks are very durable and comfortable. There is nothing at all wrong with them. You mention that you DIY hammock seems to be very durable. With that being said I would not hesitate at all to take it camping.

The hamock i made is called he "Sew What Hammock". It is basically a halved bedsheet that is whipped at the end with paracord (i think whipped is the right term). When i first made it, the bedsheet broke after minutes, but i was soon to be informed that he sheet was 20 years old! So i swapped it for a new, regular bed sheet and it seems to hold up well although i have not done a whole bunch of testing on it yet. Feel free to google "sew what hammock" and you will see how to make it and what it is for that matter.

I recently purchased my first hammock - a HH Ultralite Backpacker with a Hex Tarp with the free scout. I got two hammocks, two tarps, two sets of snakeskins, and two sets of tree hugger straps for $199 incl shipping.

I also liked the speer and WWBB, but I couldn't pass up the deal HH was offering. This way my son got a hammock as well.

The HH folks were great! The order was received within about a week.

I also just ordered a 3-season Crowsnest with 900 Fill Down on the Black Friday Sale.

Looking forward to "backyard camping" during Christmas.

Welcome to HF If you feel like you have confidence in your DIY stuff then by all means do it up right. Like Odds said, I think people do it more based on the fact that it gives them personal satisfaction and that their item is unique. I have to say it is fun to go backpacking with people that have their own unique quirky gear. Makes it more fun than to just see the same old stuff all the time
