Depending on what you use, the trail stick may be a pain to remove.

I can pull my toggle out from the side, yang on the strap and the knot undoes itself.

If I were to find a handy piece of bamboo or smooth sapling that would work fine. If I find something knotty, its going to be obnoxious to remove.

FWIW, I think I'm going to give elephant ears a go and see how I like them. I find the MSH to slide too much one day, and the next it stays put. *shrugs*

So I tried using carbon fiber arrow shafts from DIY gear supply. I just set my hammock up for the first time outside, and thought I had the whoopie sling resting on the knot above the toggle, but the second I leaned back into the hammock, both toggles snapped. I'm assuming it's user error here? Because it doesn't seem like a toggle should be a high stress item...

I'm using a piece of cf from a fishing rod blank, seems to work well enough

I've had both carbon arrow shafts and 5/8'th kite rods snap. I don't trust anything hollow any longer.

Finally got around to testing the whistle toggles. They did just fine, also after the child-jump test. I've tied them to the 'eyes' of the whoopies, so I can't pull those in accidentally.

Still getting the hang of it

I stole this idea from another member, but I just break pieces off a plastic hanger and use those for a toggle. I've been using the same pair for a couple years and no problems yet. I weigh about 180. Of course, I usually forget at least one so I end up using sticks pretty often. The benefit of using a toggle over a stick is that if you are using dutch clips or a biner, you can just throw your straps on the tree and they're ready to attach to without having to tie the MSH again, as long as you don't have to move it. Also, I've had more than one trustworthy-looking stick put me on the ground

I use ring/straps now but when I used whoopie slings I just grabbed a couple sticks from the ground. They are always there.

Cut an ink pen in half from a hotel lobby. Worked fine for me.
