Pads work fine! I took a a Thermarest pad down to 35f with just a 40F top quilt. If you have decent pads or sleeping bags you could use them in your hammock with little difficulty. That way you can put your cash into your hammock and tarp, instead of insulation. You can always upgrade to quilts latter. Also it is possible to use a pad with an underquilt to extend it's range. I'm doing that tonight for a test hang to prepare myself for the MN Frozen But Hang, my theory is that I should be able to get to -0F, I'll let you know how it goes.

You have to special order a Wren to get a 3/4 zipper, the 36in is standard. The 3/4 is an excellent idea though.

I'm waiting for a 3 Season Burrow from Storm Crow. This will be my first top quilt. I've been using a sleeping bag up till now. It works ok, but I don't like the hood & the hood & neck draft collar cords in my face. It's a lot of extra material to contend with in the hammock.

Does anybody have any experience with Montbell UL Super Spiral down sleeping bags? I have been thinking about getting a Montbell sleeping bag for when I know I will have to go to the ground as I did on my recent Grand Canyon trip. I love to hang but out here in the desert sometimes there is not much choice and I have to go to the ground. I plan on going back to the GC some more so I am looking to get a tent and sleeping bag.

In the colder weather I use an old North Face Ibex mummy down sleeping bag as a TQ. I leave the bottom partialy zipped for a foot box and it works just fine. For a warmer weather I use a retagular synthetic bag to use as a TQ. I always take my trusty poncho liner as a lite weight backup blanket for warner weather or to cover my head when its cold out. Maybe one day when I have the extra bucks I will get a real TQ but for now I will work with what I have and have tested.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
