Mac, is that tarp 8.5 x 8.5? 114" ridgeline should be close to that, unless it is rectangular.

    Terrapin Tarps Slider

Right now, I have a borrowed Terrapin Tarps Slider. It is a tapered hex tarp, measuring just over 9' at the ridgeline; the widest hex is 8.5' and the narrow end is 7.5'. See his tarps here: www.terrapintarps.com.

I used this tarp this past weekend, when backpacking with the boy scouts. This weekend, I may use it this weekend, and I will likely use it on my next solo backpack trip 10 days from now (stay tuned for more details boys and girls).

There is some gear I don’t look at as 3 season and a tarp is one of them.

I consider the tarp a primary piece of weather protection gear and shelter. A tarp should be able to give adequate protection, whatever the conditions you may encounter...not “will” encounter, but “may” encounter.” I say this because you never know what conditions you may face, like snow in mid summer, sudden violent storms, having the room to setup or cook and relax under in pouring rain, or having to setup on the ground for instance and etc.

Like I say, it’s just me, but a good tarp should offer the best protection, under the worst of conditions. This philosophy is what enables me to maintain a single tarp, rather than several, for a single purpose.

I'm with leepingreenlizards, and have only one tarp. 8'x10' DIY. Two colors, for prettiness that I use to justify it's size. And I wish it was 8'x11', for extra coverage on the ends of my hammock.....

Rectangular, not cat-cut. Extra tie-outs in the middle help with tautness, though it's never been a big problem without them. I have stayed dry with it even under EXTREMELY pounding-hard rainy conditions. We had one storm in the BWCA that convinced me never to skimp on tarp size.
