    Conversion To Whoopies...a couple questions.

My amsteel will be arriving soon, so I've been reading everything I can find on making my whoopies. Does it matter what method I use to make the fixed eye?
I plan to use a locked Brummel, as it looks relatively easy, and I hate sewing. Is it best to do the loop and bury after attaching the sling to the Hennessey? I'd like to end up with the bury very close to the hammock.

I'd like the option to still use the stock tarp attached to the sling. Is anyone doing this? Does the bury get in the way of attaching a prussik to the amsteel (with a few extra loops)?

Is 15 feet too long to start with? No point in wasting Amsteel.

I have not looked into any other methods of creating the fixed end other than by splicing, but I can imagine there are definitely other methods out there that would work.

As far as they bury, if you want that as close to the end of the hammock as possible, I would recommend that you do that step after attaching the fixed end to the hammock. when adding the bury also take into consideration that when you finally do add weight to the slings, the end connected to the hammock will continue to settle and tighten so the bury will eventually end up possibly an inch or two further away because of that as well, which is just one more reason to attach it first before making the bury.

As far as using the stock tarp, I would definitely look into using a fixed ridgeline rather than attaching straight to the whoopies, but if you would still like to try, I would imagine that you could get away with it. The bury could very well get in the way of this though.

I made my whoopies using 20ft of amsteel each, and I do feel that it is just a bit too long. 15ft would be a good length to use as it would give you a lot of adjustability, and at the same time it should not be "more than you would ever need."

i used opie's instructions on only making a 2" eye for my HH.

you also need to leave more length between the end of you fixed eye bury and the exit of your adjustable loop.

then i used opies youtube video instructions for attaching the finished whoopie to my HH.

Great links Storm, I hadn't seen the thread about lengths.
    Thanks.

My whoopies are done! This is an easy enjoyable project. I should have done it a long time ago! West Marine shipped my Amsteel in 4 days, to Canada, for free! No shipping, no taxes....amazing service. The hardest part of the upgrade was keeping the 3 kittens we are fostering from playing in the Amsteel.

Now I have to figure out what to do with the other 70 feet?

Congrats on the conversion! I just finished converting my Exped Asym over myself. One tip I can offer to those who want to be able to easily detach their whoopies is to attach a continuous "utility" loop to the hammock ends (my loop was 12" but I think 14" would work better) and then use a biner (e.g. Dutch biner) to join them. It adds a bit to the length and weight of the final setup but allows you to easily reverse the whoopies or swap them over to another hammock, and adds an additional drip stop.

Given that whoopies rely on straight-line friction to hold, I don't recommend prussiking your tarp to them as it could change the load angle and cause slippage. A separate tarp line is a better way to go, IMHO.
