New to Forum. Just wanted to say Hi

    Hi guys and gals,
Wow, what an awesome forum. I have been trolling here for over a year and finely decided to join in the great discussions on hanging and equipment.

    A little about me.
    Retired Mechanical Engineer (aerospace industry)
Born in Ohio, spent most of my childhood in Al and Fl (NASA Brat) kinda like an army brat. Moved to Denver CO @ 27 and have lived here every since. I'm 57 now.

Been backpacking since Boy Scouts. Camping in Alabama is quite buggy so I started hanging at a very young age. Got my first Army jungle hammock in 1968 from a returning Vietnam Vet and have been hanging ever since.

Here's a shot of me hanging 35 years ago in the Bob Marshall Wilderness area in Montana

Welcome! You mean you've been "lurking" for a year. "Trolls" are not welcome. Nice to see a hanging pioneer.

Welcome into the HF piney woods OutanBack. Think of yourself as one of the original hammock hangers. From the looks of your photo, you really don't need any help.
Maybe you could teach us all a thing or two. Nice setup, even for an older one at that.

    Welcome!

Wow! I am curious as to what you used for bottom insulation back then. Regular sleeping pad, blue foam, therm-a-rest?

    Hi Mark,
Ensolite in 1/2" and 5/8" had just come on the market and was the only bottom insulation offering back then.

However I only used one when I knew it would be going below 0 F.
I'm not really sure why I never got cold being barebacked so to speak. Maybe because I was only 22 back then or (engineering cap on) the fishnet hammocks let some of the sleeping bag protrude providing some dead air space.
I need to find some current hanging photos these are so old school.

Welcome to the forum. Your pics are classic . . . I had forgotten about my mesh string hammock in Boy Scouts. I don't remember being cold but we were younger then!

    See you around.
