EMBRACE THE SUCK
If I would make a ridgeline out of Amsteel and I wasnŽt certain of the exakt length needed I would do the ridgeline the same way as a whoopie.
That way you can change the length of the ridgeline until youŽve found what length is working.
If I knew what length IŽd wanted it I would just do a buried loop in each end of the ridgeline, no knots at all.

Sorry dudes, only in Swedish (so far).
A good starting point is make the ridgeline about 83% of the length of your hammock. As peter said an adjustable ridgeline is good for fine tuning you length.

Def. make a whoopie RL. I recently did this and it makes a world of difference. My old fixed RL was too long and having it be adjustable now has allowed me to get a proper hang w/o making 10 fixed RL's while searching for the right one.
Good luck,

so with 25 feet of amsteel should i have enough to make 3 whoopie slings? 2 for suspension and 1 for my ridge line or shoudl i order more?
EMBRACE THE SUCK
Depends on how long you want your whoopies. You have to keep in mind, though, that when you make a whoopie, you loop the amsteel, so essentially for a 5 foot whoopie sling, you'll need roughly a 10 foot section of amsteel. You can go with shorter whoopies if you want to use more webbing, I guess, but that does defeat a lot of the weight advantage over straps. I made long whoopies (10 feet each) so I wouldn't run into issues with trees I couldn't hang from. 10 feet is probably more than a bit excessive, though since that makes 20 feet plus the length of my hammock for tree distance :0

I think that 25 may not be enough for average use. 25 feet will make two 6 foot slings. Keep in mind for the ridgeline you do not need to make it the same as the slings for suspension. You need a shorter length because you do not need to have that much adjustment and you start the bury closer to the end. You may only need say 10 to 20 inches of adjustment. For a 100 inch ridgeline you probably only need about 130 inches of amsteel to make the fixed loops and have enough adjustment to figure out how much sag you like.

I don't use whoopies for suspension, but on my RL I made it to the dimensions given on http://whoopieslings.com/
So the short answer is if you want 3 useable whoopies, you will need more line.
Good luck,
